High Performance Low Odor Polyurethane Wood Coating “Re-Paint” A New Quality Life

In recent years, the surge in Chinese building market has come to an end with economic restructuring, slackening the growth of new house decoration and supporting paint industries. Meanwhile, the ever-growing middle-class consumers is paying more and more attention to unique appearance and health of indoor environment at home and office in pursuit of a high quality life, thus the flourish “re-paint” business gains momentum gradually.
However, how long it will take to be suitable for living in upon re-painting of wood articles indoors? Is paint harmful for health? How to choose environmental paints to meet varying performance requirements? Such questions confuse consumers desiring for a “re-painted” life. In fact, waterborne coating technology for indoor environmental health has grown since 1990s, however, products on the market are of varying advantages and disadvantages due to market positioning and technology differences, while consumers are at a loss on how to make choice due to lack of related knowledge.
As a pioneer in domestic “re-painting services”, Nippon works with Covestro to launch a PU technology-based high-end, low VOC, low odor full-effect wood coating, providing medium and high-end properties, eg. hotels and office buildings, with “turn-key” repainting services for wood ware articles. With excellent scratching and yellow liquid seepage resistance besides environmental-friendliness, the product is fit for all-dimensional applications indoors such as desk, chair, door and window, chair rail, window frame, cupboard, and floor, etc., with obvious advantages in repainting of fa?ades and aged plates.

Park Hyatt Repainted with Ease

Recently, the Park Hyatt Hotel, a five star hotel at Global Financial Center, Shanghai, experienced an “easy” aesthetic nursing thanks to its beautician - Nippon Repainting Team. The project used Nippon low odor full-effect waterborne two-component PU wood coating in repainting the wooden wall plates and elevator door plates. The repainted Park Hyatt is reinvigorated with natural and soft wood surfaces, which better underlign the Hotel's design concept of being “eye-pleasing, practicable, appropriate for traveling and living” as residence of south of the Yangtze River does, delivering a luxury yet low-profile image.
“Benefiting from the high performance waterborne two-component PU wood coating, the aged woodware glow with new vigor and can endure the test of time. While the efficient one-stop service provided by Nippon can offer clients with real considerate services, delivering health, safety, excellence and endurance,” said Gao Jiandong, Technical Director of Nippon Decoration Paint Division.
The low odor and low VOC feature of the paint can realize maintenance work safely in the same space. During repainting operation, guests on the same floor will be protected from unpleasant smells and hazardous chemicals, and can still appreciate the beautiful night scene of Lujiazui through the window. In addition, its unique paint formulation enables more flexible operation and repaint of air-conditioned rooms even in winter time.
The waterborne PU paint is also user friendly. For primary color painting, it is needed to apply sealing agent for plates twice and varnish two to three times only. For colored painting, coloring with glaze (a paint colorant) and then color-rub treasure (a paint colorant) is required before and after applying sealing agent for plates; then the painted wood ware can be used upon maintenance for over seven days. In terms of performance, the paint can form a very tough film on the surface of wood ware, prolong its lifetime greatly and save redecoration costs for hotels, offices and other public places and medium and high-end properties.

Waterborne PU Technology with Excellent Quality

PU technology was first invented by Covestro's scientist Otto Bayer in 1937, and then its excellent film forming feature enables it become widely used on various decorative and protecting surfaces in fields such as transportation, aviation, furniture and building, textiles, etc. PU paint becomes the synonym of high quality and performance.
As times goes by, the general trend of sustainable development profoundly influences all industries, while the reform to manufacturing is also driven by the rising of environment protection awareness among customers. Early in 1980s, Covestro started R&D of easy application waterborne coating solutions with equivalent performance to solvent system paints, and has accumulated abundant experience in industrial application.
The new-generation high performance low odor PU varnish and white paint developed jointly by Covestro and Nippon has become a qualified choice for domestic repainting, since it is recognized by both the standard for children paint (undergoing administrative examination by the National Standards Commission) and the national standard for waterborne coating for wood  GB/T 23999-2009 and HJ 2357-2014; and passed the test by Authoritative Agencies. It’s the preferred choice in re-paint market.
Richard Shen Infrastructure & Onsite Wood Coatings Application Development Manager at Covestro said, “Performance advantage of PU technology combined with the latest waterborne technologies brings customers with great benefits. We believe that Covestro and Nippon will “renovate” Chinese repainting market through high quality products and services, inventing new wonderful life spaces for more people.”
