River and Lake Pollution Control in China Has a Long Way to Go

Recently, the National Audit Office of China (NAO) announced its survey results showed that the Chinese government has cost RMB91 billion for the prevention and control of water pollution of three rivers and three lakes, which including Liao River, Hai River, Huai River and Taihu Lake, Chaohu Lake, Dianchi Lake, from 2001 to 2007. The government has constructed 8 201 projects in terms of environmental-protection infrastructure facility and the comprehensive treatment and soon on.
Although these projects had made some progress, the rivers and lakes listed above still have poor water quality. Data made by detection centers of the Ministry of Environmental Protection during January 1st, 2007 to June 30th, 2008 showed that the water quality of both Huai River and Liao River was in medium level pollution, and the average water quality of Hai River and the three lakes was basically at Grade V.
NAO attributed the failure partly to embezzlement and uncompleted policies and measures, noting that the improvement of environmental compensation mechanism need to be intensified and the statistics and assessment indicators system of water pollution control were not that perfect yet.
