China Launches Dicofol Control Project

On April 8th, 2009 United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MOEP) and the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) of China jointly launched in Beijing a dicofol control demonstrative project to control the production of DDT contained dicofol and develop the integrated pest management (IPM) demonstrative technology, under the frame of Global Environment Facility (GEF). On the launching ceremony, the Foreign Economic Cooperation Office of MOEP and the Crop Farming Department of MOA jointly signed the project conduction agreements with Yidu of Hubei province, Luochuan county of Shaanxi province and Zhanhua county of Shandong province respectively.
DDT made in China is used as an intermediate for dicofol production. According to the Stockholm Convention, China will stop the production, use, import & export of POPs, including DDT, etc. from May 2009 on. The non-enclosed production of dicofol, with DDT as raw material, will also be completely prohibited.
The dicofol control demonstration project is aimed to address the problems and issues that have arisen by the prohibition of DDT through policy development, IPM technical demonstration, promotion and education, treatment of wastes, the assessment of production site and the management of enclosed production, etc. By optimizing the production routine and management ability of enclosed dicofol production in a given site, demonstrating and popularizing the IPM technology, this project will help push the elimination of acaricide-containing POPs and minimize the harmful emissions from the production and use of dicofol.
