Shenhua to Launch First CCS Project

China's first carbon capture and storage (CCS) demonstrative project is in the stage of study, development and primary evaluation in Shenhua Group Corporation Limited, China's leading coal and coal-based chemical company. The company reported the CCS project may match with the 1 million t/a coal direct liquefaction demonstrative project that is being constructed by Shenhua, helping reduce the carbon dioxide emission in the coal to oil production and realize clean conversion.
According to Shenhua, the project will be commercialized in one or two years. At present various storage methods available are on the option table, including geological storage. The cost and benefit judgment has not yet been considered. Several organizations based in the United States will join in this project.
In the direct coal liquefaction technology Shenhua purchased, three tons of carbon dioxide with a high purity will be emitted in the production of one ton of oil products. The capture cost is very low.
