By Jenny Du
Recently, the DOW Chemical Company of the United States
introduced the "Human Element" to China. The "Human Element"
series campaign was launched in North America and Europe
respectively from 2006 and the Q2 of 2007. As a leading science
and technology company with 110 years of history, DOW ranked No.
1 in the GLOBAL TOP 50 Chemical Companies and gained 2006 annual
sales of more than US$49 billion. More than 3 400 products made
by Dow at 165 manufacturing sites are offered to customers in
more than 175 countries. In Greater China today, DOW achieved
US$2.7 billion sales revenue in 2006 and hires around 2 200
employees and has five business centers and ten manufacturing
sites. "Our vision is to be the largest, most profitable and most
respected chemical company in the world." said Jim Mcllvenny,
president, Asia Pacific & Greater China, the DOW Chemical
Company. He also stated DOW's strategies as follows - driving
financial discipline and low cost to service, building a people
centric performance culture, investing for strategic growth and
setting the standard for sustainability.

Commitment to sustainability
Dow views sustainability as the driven force since its
foundation and believes sustainability is highly relevant in
China. Dow has formulated the 2015 Sustainability Goals, which
focuses on three objects - supporting the people and more than
150 communities in 37 countries where DOW operates, pioneering
and contributing to the new solutions for some of the most series
global problems and confronting two challenges - energy and
climate change. DOW makes the commitment to give ambitious R&D
in renewable energy and to deliver a photovoltaic system to the
public by 2015 that will deliver electricity at 6 cents a KWH
without greenhouse gas emission for long term.
To achieve its 2015 Sustainability Goals, some efforts made
by DOW are already underway in China. Safe Management of
Hazardous Chemicals National Pilot Project with SAWS (State
Administration of Work Safety) is a 3-year project with an
investment of RMB6 million was started in 2006. National Cleaner
Production Pilot Project in partnership with SEPA (State
Environmental Protection Administration) started from 2005 is
also a 3-year project. With an investment of RMB6 million, the
project aims to provide small and medium enterprises with
education on promoting and developing cleaner production
practices. Economic benefit of RMB103.49 million was achieved
for the first year. DOW signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with the
Administrative Committee of Zhangjiagang Free Trade Zone to
expand Zhangjiagang Site in Jiangsu province on May 31st, 2006.
(CCR2006, No.16) Named an "Environmentally - friendly company
by SEPA in 2006, Zhangjiagang Site will further strengthen Dow's
capabilities in serving local and regional customers. On June
29th, 2006 DOW acquired Omex Environmental Engineering Co., Ltd.,
which will address one of the important sustainable development
challenges - clean water supply.

DOW R&D - We are Human Elements
Taking innovation as the heart and soul, DOW has discovered and
developed game-changing technologies, chemistries, materials,
products and processes over the past 110 years. In order to solve
the world's most pressing problems, DOW will focus on creating

development and global research. Shanghai R&D Center takes
accelerating regional growth and leveraging global technologies
as its key objectives. Organizations including Customer
Innovation Center, Market & Application Development Labs,
Materials Engineering Center and Prototype Labs interact in an
all-round way.

Introducing the "Human Element" to China
DOW's strategies are driving financial discipline and low cost
to serve, building a people centric performance culture,
investing for strategic growth and setting new standard for
sustainability. In order to attract and retain the very best
people, DOW recognizes there is power in people working together.
DOW people harness this power everyday to support each other.
As Jim Mcllvenny believes, the human element will continue to
discover new ways to harness science and technology to make a
difference in the world.
