Dimethyl Carbonate Synthesis Through Urea Alcoholysis

The project for the "research of dimethyl carbonate synthesis
through urea alcoholysis" completed by the Chemical Industry
Department of Energy and Power Engineering School of Xi'an
Jiaotong University has recently passed the research
achievement appraisal organized by Shaanxi Provincial
Department of Science and Technology.
Dimethyl carbonate has extensive applications. It can be used
as organic synthesis intermediate, non-reactive solvent and
fuel additive ingredient. Due to the acute toxicity of raw
material, the poor safety of operation and the high cost of
production, however, the traditional synthesis method
restricted the large-scale production of dimethyl carbonate.
With funds provided by relevant departments, the project team
has developed a new process for the dimethyl carbonate
production using urea and methanol with low price and extensive
availability as raw materials and polyphosphoric acid as
catalyst. The process has the features of high product yield and
environmental friendly production.
