800 000 T/A Alumina Expansion Project Starts Production in Shanxi

The 800 000 t/a alumina expansion project in Shanxi Branch China Aluminum Co., Ltd. and the 280 000 t/a electrolytic aluminum and 2×300MW power generation project in Shanxi Huaze Aluminum Power Co., Ltd. were completed and put on stream in Hejin, Shanxi province on Sept. 25.      When the existing capacity of 1.4 million t/a alumina in Shanxi Branch China Aluminum Co., Ltd. is added, Hejin will have a capacity of 2.2 million t/a alumina, 280 000 t/a electrolytic aluminum and 160 000 t/a carbon and a 600MW power station. It will become the largest aluminum industry base in China with a large integrated production chain of alumina and electrolytic aluminum.     The 280 000 t/a aluminum-power integrated project has a total investment of RMB6.1 billion. It is jointly funded by China Aluminum Corporation of China Limited and Shanxi Zhangze Electric Power Co., Ltd. at an equity split of 6:4. The electrolysis section uses 300kA pre-baked cells. Flue gas from the electrolytic section uses the world advanced dry-process purification technology. Carbon anode baking oven uses the flue gas dry-process adsorption purification technology. 2×300MW power generation set is an air-cooling model to meet the requirements of water conservation and environmental protection and a desulfurization unit is also constructed.     The 800 000 t/a alumina expansion project has a total investment of RMB3.665 billion. A standby co-generation station is also constructed. The leading product is first class sandy alumina. It is the first sandy alumina production line using the lime Bayer process. In this way protective development can be conducted, comprehensive utilization of minerals with high, medium and low grades can be achieved and coordinated and sustained development can be made. The project also uses new processes for environmental protection. The dust removal rate in the standby co-generation station is 99.3% and the water recycle rate is 93.5%. All production water is recycled for use and there is no discharge of production sewage. (CCR2002 No. 22)
