Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group has got the environmental impact assessment ratification from Shaanxi Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment for the technical reform at its phase I 600 kt/a methanol plant.

The project is planned to be set up in the production site of Shaanxi Coal and Chemical in Xianyang Changwu Wulipu Industrial Park. The original 600 kt/a methanol plant has been operating at low rates and will be shifted to produce 300 kt/a methanol and 300 kt/a monoethylene glycol (MEG).

The project includes methanol washing plant transformation, syngas separation plant and MEG synthesizer plant. The methanol washing plant will be modified to further remove carbon dioxide (CO2). Syngas separation is the purification of high purity carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H2) by cryogenic separation pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and hydrogen extraction.
MEG synthesizing is the synthesis of MEG by oxalate ester method (oxidation coupling method). The project has a total investment of around RMB1.97 billion, of which, RMB9.10 million will be used for environmental protection, accounting for 0.46% of the total.
